Habilitation Services

At CATS we are able to provide high quality Habilitation services for children who have a visual impairment.

Habilitation is designed to help children with visual impairments develop the skills they need to navigate daily life, achieve independence, and reach their full potential. Unlike rehabilitation, which focuses on regaining lost skills, Habilitation aims to teach skills that the child has not yet developed due to their visual impairment.

Key Aspects of Habilitation for Visually Impaired Children:

  • Teaching children to move safely and confidently in various environments. Skills taught may include using a white cane, navigating using auditory and tactile cues, and learning about spatial awareness.
  • Helping children learn essential tasks like dressing, grooming, eating, cooking, and organising their belongings.
  • Focus on building independence at home, school, and in the community.
  • Familiarisation with accessible tools like talking clocks, tactile books, and mobility aids.
  • Educating families about how to assist and encourage the child.
  • Guidance on creating an accessible home and school environment.

Goals of Habilitation for Visually Impaired Children:

  • Enable the child to achieve as much independence as possible.
  • Help them participate fully in educational, recreational, and social activities.
  • Foster confidence and skills for lifelong success.
