Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Service

When children and young people have developmental and behavioural problems parents, carers and professionals often ask us if this could be because their child’s birth mother consumed alcohol when they were pregnant.

It's a really good question because studies have shown that up to 1 in 10 women in the UK have drunk alcohol while pregnant.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) is quite an uncommon condition but Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is believed to be more widespread. The Royal College of Midwives thinks it may affect as many as 17%. Many of these children have or will have diagnoses such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and ADHD.

At CATS we have a special multidisciplinary team of paediatrics, psychologists, speech therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists.

We are able to provide an assessment in line with the NICE and SIGN guidance.
